

What is Misarticulation? Misarticulation means the incorrect way of speaking or pronounces words because the cognitive ability is low in the person. Although, that person may have good observation power but he does not know how to use and where to use correct speech in correct way. Sometimes the child may omit the words in place of particular word. For e.g. a child will pronounce l in spite of R. So Speech Therapy will help and guide your child’s misarticulation disorder. FACTS OF MISATICULATION Generally misarticulation does have brain, hearing and mouth issue. Mainly there are two main reasons of misarticulation problem i.e. physiological and functional factors.Physiological factors include cleft palate or cleft lip and tongue tie. A person is unable to speak or pronounce words correctly in terms of physiological factors so surgery can be helpful to improve communication skills. After surgery, Speech Therapist will diagnose the condition to enhance person’s communication ability as well as cognitive ability. Functional factor is a habitual process through the family background. If any member is misarticulated in family similarly a child will follow same way and will have problem in speech. Misarticulation disorder can be from 3 years and above. Duration of speech therapy takes time. It can take time 3 months to 1 year. Patient should have patience if you are going to a Speech Therapist. Misarticulation disorder is extended timely. Most of the cases are solved as per the time but the person may have mild misarticulation. By 3 or four years of age, the child should be able to speak small words like mummy, papa, dada etc clearly and correctly but if a child does not able to speak words so your child need a Speech Therapist to improve communication skills as early as possible. In a Speech Therapy, Speech Therapist will guide you to strengthen the muscles in your throat. Verbal and visual cues are also used in Speech Therapy.
